My fiancé and I Broke Up… Do I Return the Ring?

Hello everyone!

It’s been a long time since I’ve blogged! The past weeks have been insane. I had to fly abroad to finish off my Executive Education program from Kellogg University so the weeks leading up to that have been hectic. Now that things have settled, I finally can go back to one of the things I love to do: write about jewelry and anything related to it!

I’ve always been asked this question: Should engagement rings be returned or not?

Full disclosure: I was engaged eons ago so writing this blog is me drawing from my personal experience.

Breaking up is always going to be awful. Breaking up with someone whom you were supposed to spend the rest of your life with is ten times worse. You don’t just break up with your intended; you break up with the family as well! In my case, the situation was so distressing that it was my mom who had to meet up with the mom of my ex to return the ring!

So to answer the question: YES! Return the engagement ring. More so if the ring in question is a family heirloom! Don’t even wait for the man to ask for it back. Don’t hesitate to also ask your parents to act as the intermediary to initiate the conversation with the other party just like what I did. Now, if your ex graciously asked that you keep the ring, then keep it. Just recycle the ring into something else like what I did for a client of mine. I turned her ring into a pendant.

What about you? Will you return your engagement ring? I would love to hear your thoughts!
